First Seen grew out of the Bay Area playwrights' workshop ThroughLine, which has been in existence since 1993, helping writers develop their work in a collegial and supportive setting. The desire to help playwrights take their play from development to production - page to stage - provided the impetus for First Seen to form as a non-profit producing playwrights' collective in the fall of 1998. The goal for the company is to provide the playwright, audiences, and other theater artists the opportunity to see and hear new work onstage, at all levels of development - from "First Peek" private readings, to staged readings and workshops, to full productions.
